Goma is the capital of North Kivu province in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and is located at the Congo-Rwanda border on the northern shore of Lake Kivu, lying only a few kilometers away from the active Nyiragongo Volcano. The city has become a regional symbol of violent conflict dynamics: its recent history has been dominated by the volcano eruption in 2002 and the Rwandan genocide of 1994, which led to the First and Second Congo Wars.
