From its unification around 3100 B.C. to its conquest by Alexander the Great in 332 B.C., ancient Egypt was the preeminent civilization in the Mediterranean and the site of one of the world’s earliest urban and literate societies. The river Nile not only has provided a constant source of water but has also created the fertile lands that fed the growth of its unique culture. Pharaonic Egypt thrived for some 30 centuries through a series of native dynasties, until becoming an integral part of the Hellenistic world under the Greek Ptolemaic dynasty. However, the Ptolemies had to fight in foreign and civil wars, leading to the decline of the kingdom and its final annexation to the Roman Empire in 30 BC. The territory remained part of the Byzantine Empire until it was conquered by Arab Muslim armies, which turned Egypt into the intellectual and cultural center of the Arab and Islamic world. However, in 1517 the Ottoman Empire defeated the Muslim caliphate and gained control over Egypt until the first European occupation in 1798, led by Napoleon I. In 1869 with the opening of the Suez Canal, connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea, Egypt became a major hub for trade routes between Africa, Europe, and Asia. Egypt finally gained independence as a monarchy in 1922. However, in 1952 a military coup installed a revolutionary regime declaring a Republic and merging with Syria into the short-lived United Arab Republic. The extreme political rhetoric and nationalization prompted the Suez Crisis of 1956 and much of the social and religious strife, along with political instability during the course of the 20th century.
