Victoria is located on the northeastern coast of Mahé Island (the largest island in the Seychelles group) and is the capital of the Republic of Seychelles since the country’s independence, other than its only port. Its foundation dates back to the French settler period, but it was later established as the seat of British colonial government and renamed after Queen Victoria. Today, tourism is a major part of the city’s economy because of the area’s beaches and ocean waters.
