Tanzania is a country in East Africa situated just south of the Equator within the African Great Lakes region. The territory is well endowed with significant cultural and natural heritages ranging from the Pliocene period about four million years ago to the present time. The ancient migration of Cushitic, Nilotic, and Bantu peoples, which displaced the native San population, resulted in a complex agglomeration of communities that still shapes Tanzania’s multiethnic population with a variety of traditions and customs, forming a rich cultural heritage. German rule began in the mainland during the late 19th century, followed by British rule after World War I. During this period, the mainland was known as Tanganyika and governed as a separate colonial jurisdiction from the Zanzibar Archipelago. The United Republic of Tanzania was formed as a sovereign state through the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar after their respective independence.
