Tunisia’s coastline on the Mediterranean Sea is the northern point of Africa, and this made it the subject of many empires throughout history. In ancient times, Tunisia was primarily inhabited by Berbers. Around the 12th century, BC Phoenicians migrated to the area and founded the famous Carthage which became a major power, controlling the North African coast from Tripolitania to the Atlantic. After the three Punic Wars, in 146 BC the Romans finally won over the area and made it a Roman province for over 500 years. Later on, the Arabs invaded Tunisia and introduced the religion of Islam: today nearly 99% of Tunisians are Muslim. The country eventually remained a center of Arab culture but became part of the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century. In 1881, the French gained control of the country, which remained under French rule until Tunisia became independent in 1956, declaring the Tunisian Republic. After the Tunisian Revolution of 2011, Tunisia represented the only country in North Africa classified as “Free” by the Freedom House Organization and a fully democratic state in the Arab World.
